Music: Stromae

I want to introduce you all to one of my all time favorite artists; Paul Van Haver, more famously known as Stromae. He is a Belgian hip-hop/electro artist who writes his own music and has an authentic voice. I have become obsessed with Stromae since I first discovered him by accident! Although he is rather famous in Europe he has yet to make it big in the North American market, which truly saddens me because of his genius level talent.

I first discovered Stromae when I was intensely listening to anything and everything Kanye (this is before he went totally ego-craze) and he had this awesome remix of a song called “Alors au Danse” and as soon as I heard the chorus my search for the original artist was on! This quickly led me to discover Stromae and the original version of the song:

Soon after my discovery, I began to listen to Stromae’s album Racine Carrée which has done really well in Europe and has received great reviews, yet still in North America he is not known. I am well aware that there are limitations to foreign music success and since Stromae’s album is in French, it probably prohibits him from making it big in the U.S and Canadian markets.  It is unfortunate though that he doesn’t get any radio play in Canada since we do have French as our second language but I think we have covered why that is. I myself barely speak French and understand it at a basic level however, I have to say this music is addictive regardless of your French skills. Every song on his album is golden, from the beat to his rhythm. Often when I have people over I play his entire album in the background and once people hear him, they are curious to know who he is and where to get his music.

I am just glad that he is paying a visit to Vancouver (his ONLY Canadian city listed on his tour) on April 5th and I’ve already got my ticket! Stay-tuned for my concert review!

Here are some of my other favorites by Stromae:

Stromae – Formidable

The music video for this song was shot guerrilla style and entirely through the use of hidden cameras. Epic? I think so!

Stromae – Tous Les Mêmes

This song challenges gender-roles and in the video Stromae has no hesitation to really go there! No fear- love it!

Speaking of Hôtel Costes… I want to be back there for a visit the next time I’m back in Paris… but with regards to Stromae’s show in Vancouver… I am “thinking” about it! We’ll see. 😉
