Today Elon Musk unveiled his plans to colonise Mars by 2025 and made the “unimaginable” a real possibility for us to experience in our lifetime. The founder of SpaceX has long planned to colonise Mars but it seems that even he wasn’t entirely certain that his vision would be realised in the early days of SpaceX. However, one thing was clear, he sure as hell was going to try even if it meant losing his 165 million dollar fortune from selling PayPal.
If you read Musk’s blog you can almost get inside the brain of a man who appears to be; fearless, intelligent, witty and ultimately a visionary with a no BS kind of attitude. It’s that attitude that has become the driving force for Musks grand master plan of colonizing Mars and other human-friendly planets.
According to Musk; history has taught us that there are two paths, Humans can stay on Earth forever and eventually there will be some sort of an extinction event. The alternative is that we need to become a multi-planet species in order to survive.
“We all need a reason to wake up in the morning and to look forward to the future”
This is obviously not an easy task and one has to wonder why would such a successful person, who seemingly has it all, even want to take on such a challenge ? Moreover, why should we even care about colonizing Mars since it’s unlikely that we would experience human extinction in our lifetimes? You can bet Elon has an answer for this and it’s short, simple and gratifying:
“You need things like that to be glad to wake up in the morning,” he said. “Life can’t be just about solving problems. There have to be things that are inspiring and exciting and make you glad to be alive.”
Indeed, what an exciting time to be alive we are currently living in the most technologically advanced world and now we have the option to go to Mars soon! In fact, Elon has promised that ultimately going to Mars will be as affordable as 200 thousand dollars for the journey which is crazy to think about. So I guess there is just one question left; Would you live on Mars?
